Navalny is triumphant: the European Court sided with him, ignoring Russia’s arguments
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny won the ECHR case against the Russian authorities, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The politician himself notified his supporters about this on Instagram.
“Complete and unconditional victory in court today. Representatives of Putin's government were defeated. Even Article 18 (political motive for persecution) was recognized, which the court has not done in Russian cases for 15 years,” he wrote.
According to Navalny, the current decision of the ECHR is “important not only for me, but also for hundreds of citizens throughout vast Russia, who, without any guilt, are taken to the police and arrested for any reason.
With this decision, the ECHR changed its practice and now it will be easier to prove a political motive.”
According to the oppositionist, the European judges voted in his favor with a score of 14 to 3.
In turn, commenting on the decision of the ECHR, the head of the Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Leonid Slutsky noted that
The court, with its final verdict on Navalny’s claim, “once again gave reason to doubt its objectivity and impartiality.”
As evidence of the bias of the European Court, Slutsky cites the fact that Navalny was awarded an unprecedentedly huge amount of compensation compared to similar cases.
“In addition, the Grand Chamber confirmed the “political motivation” of administrative preventive measures in the Russian Federation against him, recognizing violations under Article 18 of the ECHR (European Convention on Human Rights). Back in February 2017, the Strasbourg court refused to do this,” added Slutsky, according to whom the European judges, who completely ignored all the arguments of the Russian side, were guided by political motives.
Let us note that since 2014 Russia has not taken part in the elections of judges of the ECHR, the composition of which has been significantly updated since that time.
