The imposed volumes of transit through Ukraine turned out to be unnecessary for Gazprom
Since the beginning of the year, Gazprom has reduced transit volumes through Ukraine by almost three times. The reason is warm weather and high loading of storage facilities in Europe, which were filled to capacity in case of a failed “gas war” between Kyiv and Moscow.
The Kommersant newspaper writes about this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication notes that the Turkish Stream, launched the day before, also played a role, which took part of the transit.
However, none of the branches at Gazprom’s disposal are currently fully loaded - the reason is that Europeans are choosing reserves from storage facilities.
At the same time, gas prices are falling. The absence of frost plays against the interests of Gazprom - prices and sales volumes to the West do not increase. Competition with liquefied gas, the supply of which to Europe is growing, also has an impact.
However, under the new gas contract in 2020, Gazprom is obliged to pump 65 billion cubic meters of gas through Ukraine. Gazprom must pay for this capacity, even if it does not use it.
