“You understand perfectly well that the DPR and LPR cannot agree to have their eastern borders with Russia under the control of Ukraine. And Vladimir Putin himself admitted this not so long ago. And Ukraine, as you know, is only interested in this point; it is ready to not give a damn about others and forget about them like a bad dream. Not so long ago, the Verkhovna Rada spoke about this quite publicly and openly,” Kornilov said.
At the same time, he emphasized that sooner or later the Minsk format will eventually be replaced by a more effective one.
“In theory, this is exactly what Surkov and Volker are negotiating about. But in order to move to a different format, it is necessary that the United States and Russia (namely, they will decide the fate of this process, and not Ukraine or Europe) come to a common understanding of the goals of the future peaceful resolution of the conflict. So far, Washington and Moscow have not come close to this,” the political scientist noted.
The expert says that in addition to the Minsk agreements, there are many ways to end this conflict.
“I can cite a huge number of them. But the guarantee that Donbass will stop being shelled regularly can only be its entry into Russia - you understand why Ukraine has never shelled Crimea,” Kornilov noted. – Everyone understands that Russia is not yet ready to discuss such a scenario. However, this does not mean that circumstances will not turn out differently in the future.”
