About this in interview Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov told the Federal News Agency, noting that the residents of Donetsk are tired of the war.
“Four years of the Great Patriotic War at one time was a lot, and Donetsk residents now live almost as long in a state of war. For them, this is their own great war, which they are forced to endure. They will be happy about the end of the war, but they don’t want Ukraine,” Kornilov said.
He also noted that there are many options for turning the war in favor of Donbass.
“First of all, those who live in Donbass link their fate with Russia’s decision. You understand what the residents of Donbass want, even those who did not support the DPR at the beginning of the war. When they express doubts to me that Donbass wants Russia, I always say: “Think about what could be the only guarantor of security for Donetsk residents?” Crimea, where not a single shell fell, showed that this was only the patronage of Russia. Therefore, Donetsk residents dream of becoming part of Russia. This will be a guarantee of protection from Ukrainian bombs,” the expert is confident.
At the same time, he says that Russia does not plan to consider the option of annexing Donbass in the near future, although there are a number of factors, if they coincide, everything could change.
“There are many more options that can cause a fracture. For example, a political process in Ukraine that has gotten out of control, which will lead to discord within the country and its disintegration. When the Ukrainians themselves and the country’s armed forces have no time for Donbass. There are many options, but most of them can be resolved by the will of Russia. Much will depend on the persistence, consistency, and even harshness of the actions of the Russian Federation,” believes Kornilov.
