A compromise is likely between Kiev and Moscow on the continuation of the contract for the transit of Russian gas to the EU through Ukraine, which expires on December 31.

A source in the energy sector told the Kiev online newspaper “Strana” about this.

The parameters of the compromise look like this: Ukraine withdraws its claims in the courts against Gazprom, which is doing the same. Next, a multi-year contract for gas transit through Ukraine is concluded (specific figures are still being discussed). In addition, the Russian Federation is ready to supply gas to Ukraine directly at a discount and at prices lower than Kyiv buys from European intermediaries.

“This option is interesting for Russia, as it allows us to return with supplies to the rather large Ukrainian market. Naturally, it is also beneficial for Ukraine, since it will at least allow not to increase tariffs for the population, or even reduce them,” the publication says.

At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor says that the likelihood of reaching a compromise is now “higher than before, since Zelensky is determined to resolve the issue before the new year,” but the leadership of NJSC Naftogaz may try to disrupt the compromise.

The source also named the main lobbyists for the disruption of the gas compromise with Moscow.

“Firstly, this is the management of NAC, which has already received multimillion-dollar bonuses for the courts. And if you refuse the claims, then what now, give them away or what? Secondly, these are different people who have their own interests in the companies that are now reselling Russian gas from Europe to Ukraine. This includes the leadership of NAC and people associated with Poroshenko’s entourage,” notes the publication’s interlocutor.

In addition, the American energy lobby is interested in disrupting the transit of Russian gas, for whom such a development of events will make it easier for them to conquer the European market.

“Fourthly, these are Ukrainian gas producers - Kolomoisky and others, who hope to raise prices due to the shortage. These are quite powerful forces, and therefore the fight will be very tough,” the source said.

As PolitNavigator reported, recently the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky called my Russian colleague Vladimir Putin. During the conversation, as reported in the Kremlin, gas issues were discussed in detail, including the issues of continuing transit and resuming direct supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine.
