Drugs used to treat coronavirus infection in Russia named
Previously, antimalarial and antiretroviral drugs were used in the treatment of COVID-19 in Russia, but now they are practically not used.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Ekaterina Trifonova, head of the Center for Infectious Diseases of the Central Clinical Hospital, spoke about this in an interview with Izvestia, answering the question of how the treatment regimen for coronavirus infection has changed compared to the beginning of the epidemic.
“In the spring we used antimalarial and antiretroviral drugs. Now we almost never use them. We are focusing on regimens that contain favipiravir drugs under various trade names - this is the only drug that is officially registered for the treatment of coronavirus infection in Russia,” the doctor said.
According to her, these types of drugs are prescribed to almost all patients. As for the effectiveness of these medications, the publication’s interlocutor says that it all depends on at what stage a person turns to doctors.
“In patients who start taking the drug earlier, the effect is achieved faster and the percentage of complications is lower. Prescribing the drug in the later stages does not give reason to believe that the disease will be mild and there will be no complications even with antiviral therapy. Here the question is no longer about the effectiveness of the drug, but about the fact that the virus has already launched a pathological mechanism in the human body, and the drug simply no longer works on it,” Trifonova noted.
