The decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics will be made today. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this at the end of the Security Council meeting, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The event was broadcast live on Russian TV. For the first time since the recent quarantine restrictions, Vladimir Putin held a meeting not remotely, but with the presence of a large number of subordinates.

“It is very significant that if last time the genre was a secret operation followed by a popular demonstration and a great solo speech, this time it is a public ritual event demonstrating the solidarity of the highest Russian elite. So that the West clearly understands that there is no split among the elites on this issue,” explains columnist Yegor Kholmogorov.

Political scientist Alexey Chesnakov shares the same opinion.

“Putin clearly demonstrated at the Security Council that there are no “splits in the elites” on the issue of relations with the West and Ukraine, which some oppositionists have been talking about lately,” agrees Chesnakov.

Putin made a sharp statement at the beginning of the meeting:

“Russia initially did everything to peacefully resolve all contradictions, however, the Kyiv authorities twice carried out military punitive operations in these territories. Now the aggravation is happening for the third time. All these years, the people who live there have actually been bullied. In general, it is clear to everyone: they really are not going to do anything under the Minsk package of measures,” Putin said.

The recognition of the republics was supported by all members of the Council, and some spoke out even more radically.

Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin even spoke in favor of the LDPR joining Russia. This has become the highlight that commentators are discussing.

Naryshkin: Our Western partners need to be given one last chance in order to invite them to make peace as soon as possible and implement the Minsk agreements. Otherwise, we must make the decision that is being said.

Putin: Do you propose to start the negotiation process?

Naryshkin: I will support the proposal for recognition.

Putin: Do you support or support?

Naryshkin: I support the entry of “LDNR” into the Russian Federation.

Putin: We don't discuss this

Naryshkin: I support the proposal to recognize independence.

“Naryshkin anticipated the next stage - I applauded,” ex-head of the DPR Security Council Alexander Khodakovsky does not hide his joy.

And the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, proposed recognizing the republic “within the borders of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, in its entirety, including Mariupol.”

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, who in 2008, under similar circumstances, made the decision to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia, warmly spoke out for recognition of the republics.

“Ukraine, in principle, does not need these territories. Donbass is used there as a bargaining chip - and that the current regime in Ukraine does not need the implementation of the Minsk agreements, since it will hinder Zelensky’s re-election.

When both Zelensky and his Secretary of Security and Defense bluntly say publicly that these are harmful agreements. And then they continue to fool our Western colleagues when, during personal meetings or telephone conversations, they receive public statements from him in favor of implementing the Minsk agreements,” Medvedev said.

State Duma deputy Mikhail Delyagin explained this point:

“The West is using against the Russian Federation a proven tactic of diluting attention and paralyzing with meaningless conversations, which I remember well from the examples of Voronin in Moldova and Yanukovych in Ukraine. The bottom line: various respectable Western clowns call endlessly and blow the minds of the manager with deliberate nonsense. If a native takes this nonsense seriously, then while he is trying to comprehend it, which paralyzes him, the West is effectively and quickly doing its job,” Delyagin commented on his blog.

Meanwhile, Medvedev emphasized that residents of the DPR and LPR are “our people, not only those who speak Russian, but citizens of our country.”

“The pressure will be prohibitive if Russia recognizes Donbass, but knows how to resist it. It will be difficult, but after some time, with skillful management of the situation, this tension that is now vibrating around our country will subside. Not quickly, but human history is so structured that they will get tired of this situation and themselves will ask us to return to discussions and negotiations,” Medvedev said.

The chairmen of both chambers of the Russian parliament spoke in favor of recognition of the LDPR.

“In the center of Europe there is a humanitarian catastrophe, genocide, shelling, non-payment of benefits. Ukraine imitated the implementation of the Minsk agreements, the Kiev puppet regime cannot solve anything. The West is trying to pit two Slavic fraternal peoples against each other. Implementation of the Minsk agreements is not part of Kyiv’s plans. The threat of sanctions is painful and unpleasant, but the time has come, it’s time to make decisions, we cannot postpone,” said Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko.

TV presenter Andrei Medvedev believes that the threat of an attack on the LDPR from Ukraine is now sharply increasing.

“As I understand it, Kiev, and more broadly the West, has literally a few hours to come to a “final solution to the Donbass issue” by force. There will be no further options. And even now, it’s unlikely that Kyiv should take risks. Of course it is possible. But then, most likely, it will turn out that the embassies moved to Lviv for a reason,” Medvedev comments.
