We don’t want it like in the USA: In St. Petersburg they protested against the demolition of the monument in Sochi
Young representatives of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Democrats movement went out on pickets against the dismantling of a monument in honor of a Russian fortress during the Caucasian War, carried out the day before in Sochi, following the demands of the Circassian community.
The picketers drew parallels between what happened in the south of Russia and actions of similar “politically correct vandalism” in the United States.
Two representatives of the Russian Democrats movement held a rally near St. Petersburg Lyceum 214. They held posters in their hands: “BLM is already in Russia” and “Today they are demolishing the monument in Adler, tomorrow they will demolish the Constitution and Russia.”
“We are holding this action because the monument to Russian soldiers was demolished in Adler,” Ivan Kuznetsov, chairman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Democrats, commented on the event. – The monument was not dedicated to any conquests, but to the defenders of the Fatherland. We believe that the demolition of such monuments is a rewriting of history. Considering global trends: how monuments are being demolished in America, how this trend is spreading to Europe, we fear that it may overwhelm Russia as well.”
The action ended with the director of Lyceum 214 coming out to the picketers, tearing out one of the posters and demanding that they leave the territory.
Let us recall that in Adler (Sochi) on July 9 the local administration was dismantled a monument erected on June 30 at the site where the Fort of the Holy Spirit was founded in 1837 by the Russian army during the Caucasian War. The reason was the demand of representatives of the Circassian community to remove the monument, which caused a great resonance throughout the rest of Russia. A number of representatives of the Russian intelligentsia have spoken out against the actions of the Sochi administration. As a result, I tried the situation settle State Duma deputy from the Sochi district Konstantin Zatulin, who called on everyone to calm down and promised that the monument would eventually be installed, but in a different place - closer to the location of the historical Fort of the Holy Spirit.
Thank you!
