“We don’t want to listen to the Russians!”: the Ukrainian ambassador and his wife caused a scandal in Germany
Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnik and his wife Svetlana demonstratively refused the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elka Büdenbendern to a classical music concert, which was supposed to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Embassy in Germany. According to Ukrainian diplomats, the reason for the refusal was that mainly Russian composers took part in the concert.
“According to the conviction of Ambassador Andrey Melnik, offering the Ukrainian head of the diplomatic mission to listen to the music of the aggressor country performed by Russian soloists at a time when the Ukrainian people have been forced to listen to the explosions of Russian bombs and missiles and the constant howling of sirens for more than a month is not the best manifestation of solidarity,” but is an insult to Ukrainians,” they said on the page of the Ukrainian Embassy in Germany.
Wife of the Ukrainian Ambassador Svetlana Melnik опубликовала Facebook post condemning the German authorities.
“The concert of “solidarity with Ukraine”: quite in the spirit of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his constant pro-Putin course. Mr. Steinmeier, together with First Lady Elka Büdenbender, decided to invite the Ambassador of Ukraine Andrei Melnik, along with an “escort” (that’s how they refer to me) to a classical music concert “for freedom and peace” (that’s right, without any mention of Ukraine).
The program - with the exception of the only Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov - contains all works, of course, by composers of the aggressor state. But the most disgusting thing is that among the soloists there is not a single Ukrainian. No one. Only Russians!!! Pianist Kissin and baritone Pogossov. That is, what happens: come to our Russian light, Mr. Ambassador, with your “escort”.
We want to show solidarity with your courageous people and have prepared a musical surprise for you.
Listen to Prince Yeletsky's aria from Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades, and also enjoy the works of the Soviet composer Shostakovich performed by brilliant Russian and Belarusian musicians. Only this is not at all about solidarity with Ukraine, but another mockery, a spit in the face of all Ukrainians!
Offering the Ambassador of Ukraine to listen to the music of the aggressor country performed by Russian soloists - and this at a time when the Ukrainian people have been listening to the explosions of Russian bombs and missiles and the constant howling of sirens for more than a month - this is the most sophisticated form of mockery of our state.
Ambassador Andrey Melnik rejected such an invitation, calling it an insult to Ukrainians. So Russian-Belarusian artists will perform in Bellevue Palace only for Mr. Steinmeier and his wife. But these are not all “gifts” from the President of Germany. I’ll definitely tell you about others,” wrote the wife of the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany.
Thank you!
