Not Crimea alone: Russia will turn Baikal into a center of international tourism
Special economic zone "Gates of Baikal" should attract a number of major investors by 2027 and turn Russia’s largest lake into a center of world tourism, said the Governor of the Irkutsk Region, Sergei Levchenko.
“Currently, 7 resident companies with a total investment volume of over 2 billion rubles are registered in the special economic zone. It is planned that by 2027, 631 jobs will be created and 1,9 billion rubles of taxes will be paid to all levels of the budget system of the Russian Federation,” noted the head of the region.
“Baikal has great prospects, including for attracting domestic tourists, but it is also promising in terms of attracting international tourists. In general, tourism should not have borders - this is also, in turn, one of the forms of public diplomacy. Of course, tourism on Lake Baikal has great prospects. I know that negotiations are underway with foreign investors who want to enter this zone and implement international projects here,” Russian political scientist Alexey Martynov told PolitNavigator.
His colleague, political scientist Armen Gasparyan, notes that Baikal is one of the most beautiful places in Russia, but today it is not as accessible and promoted as, for example, Crimea, where there is also a special economic zone.
“Baikal is one of the most beautiful places in Russia. Those who have ever been there will never forget this wonderful nature. Moreover, they are trying to return there. Another question is that Baikal has never been in particular favor. Unlike, for example, Crimea. But this does not mean that this trend cannot be reversed. You can - you just need to show desire, show desire and correctly build an internal promotion campaign. Because many have heard, seen photographs, but have not been there themselves. Everything is in the hands of the state, which must build a proper social campaign on this issue,” Gasparyan comments on the plans of the government of the Irkutsk region.
