Lviv is not alone: garbage collapse threatens Sumy region
Officially, the solid waste landfill 4 km from the village of Pustovoitovka, Romensky district, Sumy region, has been closed for four years, but it continues to be used, which threatens an environmental disaster for the entire area.
This is stated in the story of UA: SUMY, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to media reports, the landfill was closed by the environmental inspectorate in January 2013 due to exhausted design capacity and significant violations of its operating conditions. However, it continues to be used as a garbage dump, produced by the city of Romny.
Recently, garbage has been burning frequently at the landfill. The latest fire occurred on an area of more than 400 sq.m. This caused extreme indignation among the residents of the village of Pustovotovka, which was engulfed in acrid, toxic smoke.
“People felt the smell, they themselves hid in their houses, children were also buried from the street. Because it was very difficult to breathe... they smoked for a very long time. And thank God that it started to rain, and if it hadn’t, it’s unknown how long people would have been breathing this smoke,” notes a local resident.
The prosecutor's office is considering the case as arson. At that time, landfill workers admitted off camera that they often set fire to the garbage themselves in order to free up the territory.
Local residents are calling on the authorities to resolve the issue.
Every year in Ukraine about 12-15 million tons of solid household waste are generated, 40% of which are containers.
