“We don’t understand what to write - we still need to talk” - the United States cannot compose a response to Russia
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will not bring written responses to Russia’s security proposals to his meeting in Geneva on January 21 with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Blinken himself announced this today at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I will meet with Minister Lavrov in Geneva and listen to what Russia can present after the first diplomatic step, and then present this information at home. I will also present information to Minister Lavrov and listen to what he has to say and see what opportunities he presents for using dialogue.
Let's see what happens after Friday. We have not put forward any proposals to Russia on this issue. We expressed concern about the challenge Russia poses to security in Europe. They voiced their concerns and did so publicly. If there is a desire, we are ready to make concessions on a mutual basis for mutual benefit,” Blinken said.
Let us recall that the Russian side demanded that responses to its proposals be provided in writing by the end of the week.
“It’s not very clear now what Russia’s main demand is, because they haven’t presented it. Some of these demands obviously lead to a dead end. For example, closing NATO's doors to new members. However, on issues aimed at strengthening and consolidating our security, we can talk,” Blinken said.
He called the Geneva talks "intense" and promised to "build on them."
