“It is no coincidence that the USA and Germany betrayed Ukraine together” - American professor
Germany did not give Ukraine an oath of allegiance, and therefore it agreed to give the go-ahead to the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Oleksandr Motyl, a professor of political science at Rutgers University (USA), writes about this, as the PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in the Ukrainian Week magazine.
“Many Ukrainians believe that when Germany built Nord Stream 2, it seemed to have betrayed Ukraine. Although in reality there was no betrayal, because you can only betray someone to whom you swore allegiance. But Germany never gave such an oath to Ukraine. However, the matter does not end there. Therefore, Germany committed a much more serious crime. She betrayed herself,” says Motyl.
According to him, Germany in this case betrayed “humane values, human rights, tolerance and liberalism.”
“When Berlin built Nord Stream 2, it actually declared that it was guided not by values, but by geopolitical interests. All countries except Germany and the EU countries (and the USA) have the right to such hypocrisy. And not because we demand this from them, but because they themselves declared that values are above all for them,” the author writes.
At the same time, he explains Germany’s support for SP-2 by the fact that “the Germans are one of the most nationalistic nations in the modern world.”
“If the brutal pursuit of national interests is nationalism, as it is often interpreted, then the Germans fully deserve the name,” explains the American scientist.
“Another deeply democratic country worthy of attention is America. Trump has been called a nationalist, but Biden, Bush and Obama were no less committed to American uniqueness, necessity and rightness. No American can renounce the slogan “We are No. 1.” And he doesn't want to. Therefore, it is no coincidence that America and Germany together “betrayed” Ukraine,” Motyl sums up.
As PolitNavigator reported, during the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Washingtonan agreement was reachedthat the United States will not interfere with the completion of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
This agreement caused an extremely nervous reaction from Kyiv, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky actually moved into the camp of Biden's enemies.
