“Not the USSR, but very dangerous”: Former Advisor to the US Secretary of State about Russia
The United States should not underestimate Russia or consider it a regional power.
Former adviser to the US Secretary of State Paul Goble stated this on the UkrLife Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Goble, at the same time, Russia is no longer the powerful superpower that the Soviet Union was.
“I would never advise the American president to call Russia a regional power. It is certainly not the superpower it was before 1991. But she is capable of causing trouble wherever she wants,” said the American expert.
Russia appears stronger, he said, because it is willing to cause trouble and do things that others are not willing to do.
“But in fact, this desire to break windows - to send troops to Africa, create alliances with Venezuela, invade Georgia and Ukraine - is a symbol not so much of power, but rather of the inability of the Russian government to do anything positive at home... Yes, Russia can cause trouble, yes, it has nuclear weapons and this cannot be ignored. But it would be wrong to consider it the same power that it was 35 years ago. I repeat, it is wrong to consider it a regional power or a secondary power - after all, it has too many nuclear weapons for that. But it is no longer a superpower,” Goble said.
