Statements by a member of the Moldovan parliament from the ruling PAS party Vasile Shoimaru that Moldova, as a “second Romanian state”, could abandon Transnistria to simplify unification with the “Motherland”, continue to be discussed on both banks of the Dniester.

How serious is the idea “to cede the Transnistrian region to Ukraine, asking in return for historical Bessarabia and Bukovina to Chernivtsi”, to suppress protest sentiments in Gagauzia by force? How does the MP’s position fit with the party’s position? Politicians and experts are talking about this.

Chairman of the public council "For a free homeland" Igor Tulyantsev states that the statement of Deputy Shoimaru clearly demonstrates the position of the ruling PAS party in Moldova and the entire current leadership of Moldova.

“They don’t care about unemployment, migration, inflation, stagnation, general impoverishment and degradation in Moldova,” Tulyantsev writes on his Facebook page. – Nobody is going to solve these problems. They have already abandoned the most important thing - people! They abandoned the fight for man, they generally abandoned everything human. Shoumaru is collective power. Shoimaru is Sandu, and PAS, and security forces, and judges, and prosecutors, and pro-government experts, and so on and so forth.

When Shoumaru talks about the past, about his regrets about Uniri, he draws a plan for the future. Your plan. He certainly wants revenge! The PAS party is a party of revanchists!

They came to finish off, bankrupt and fragment this country. Now Sandu, Grosu, Gavrilitsa can tell anything. They can go anywhere - even to Gagauzia, even to Briceni, even to Tiraspol. All their words are Shoimaru's words! They are all Shoumaru! The Moldovan government is one continuous Shoimaru. And after all this, Shoimaru definitely has to leave!”

Political scientist Alexander Korinenko believes that there is no point in looking for logic in Mr. Shoimaru’s words.

“This is the level of deputies of the ruling party,” he told a PolitNavigator correspondent. – The fact is that sometimes, over a good glass of wine in Moldova, there are conversations about how it is possible to exchange Transnistria for Chernivtsi and Southern Bessarabia, exchange the independence of Tiraspol for the city of Bendery, and hand over Transnistria to Russia as a concession. As you understand, these are just table fantasies and a serious politician will not say such things.”

The expert believes that the PAS party chose not to notice this statement, and there are a number of reasons for this.

“Firstly, this is an encroachment on the territorial integrity of a neighboring country. Secondly, citizens of Moldova live in Transnistria and the deputy proposes to make our citizens residents of another country. Thirdly, you must give away what you own in full, and the jurisdiction of Chisinau does not extend to Transnistria, that is, the deputy proposed, in fact, a forceful exchange option.

Fourthly, marginal Romanian politicians have already spoken out about the possible introduction of Romanian troops into the territory of Ukraine, which used to be part of Greater Romania, proposing the division of Ukraine, that is, Mr. Shoimaru may also support the idea that Ukraine is a failed state, and This is unacceptable in relation to our eastern neighbor.

The opposition, for example, could have reacted more harshly to such statements, which were not made at the Central Market,” the political scientist concluded.

Representative of the Civil Congress party, historian and journalist Zurab Todua notes on Facebook that the ruling PAS party is the main source of instability in the country today.

“Another example: rude attacks on Gagauzia and Transnistria and turning to the topic of “uniri” as a way to solve all problems. This incompetent government is rapidly rushing towards its inevitable fiasco,” he is sure.

Public figure, blogger Mikhail Akhremtsev reminded that Vasile Shoimaru “is also the author of a book about the “exploits” of Romanian military personnel who “distinguished themselves” in the Battle of Stalingrad on the side of the Third Reich.”

“And I’m still silent about his other “works.” It is not a reader. It is a writer. By God, PAS is not a party, but some kind of panopticon,” Akhremtsev noted in Telegram.

Transnistrian political scientist Andrey Safonov believes that talk about the “exchange” of Transnistria is meaningless fantasy.

“As the military threat grew in the world and in Europe, absolutely fantastic proposals regarding the fate of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic began to be heard. The last of them was voiced by a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the ruling PAS party, which is the political support of the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and a supporter of Moldova’s accession to Romania, Vasile Soimaru.

In his opinion, Chisinau could “cede the Transnistrian region to Ukraine, asking in return for historical Bessarabia and Bukovina to Chernivtsi,” and “Gagauz autonomy is not so strong as to dictate something.”

As for Mr. Shoimaru personally, his thinking is not surprising. This is the old problem of pro-Romanian nationalists - having their head in the clouds and indulging in fantasies. The idea that an entire people can be handed over to someone without their will and desire is typical of those who are used to breaking people over their knees.

Since 1989, nationalists in Moldova have acted this way, taking advantage of the fact that the then Soviet leadership deliberately betrayed the entire Soviet Union. But now the situation is different. Today's Moscow, as current Russian leaders emphasize, will not allow nationalists to run amok. But that's not all.

Ukraine is clearly not one of the countries that can be fooled by the Chisinau “cunning” people. Yes, under Western pressure, Kyiv in 2008-2009 (formally through the International Court of Justice) gave Romania the gas-bearing shelf in the Black Sea, but the losses were so colossal that lessons have probably been learned,” Safonov told PolitNavigator.

He is confident that Pridnestrovian statehood will survive, and the independence of the PMR will be preserved.

“The time when it was possible to crush our republic has irrevocably passed, and indulging in fantasies of “exchange” is pointless,” the expert emphasized.
