At the same time, to justify the OUN, Vyatrovich gave several arguments, among which there is still an admission of the involvement of Ukrainian nationalists in the murders of Jews.
"1. Among those who killed or helped kill were members of the local police, sometimes called the Ukrainian police. But not all of them took part in this and not all of the murderers were members of this police force - the mass murder of Jews was the “competence” of the German Einsatzgruppen and the German police.
2. Among the members of this police were Ukrainians. But not all of them were Ukrainians - the local police included massive numbers of Soviet prisoners of war of different ethnic origins, for whom service with the Germans was the only salvation from death.
3. Among the Ukrainians serving as police officers were members of the OUN. But not all members of the police were OUN members (see P.2) and not all OUN members were policemen.
4. Among the OUN members who were in the police, there were those who participated in the murders of Jews. But not all OUN policemen did this. OUN member Roman Bida – “Gordon”, head of the investigative department of the local police in Kiev, saved a Jewish boy who was being led to execution at Babyn Yar, and in the winter of 1942 he himself was shot and buried in this terrible place,” writes Vyatrovich.
He also reports that a member of the OUN was the nun Elena Viter, who saved Jews and was recognized in Israel as the Righteous Among the Nations.
