Dodon, who has not fulfilled a single election promise, faces street riots
For the current Moldovan President Igor Dodon, the upcoming presidential elections will be difficult; it is possible that the pro-Western opposition will try to organize a Maidan.
This opinion is expressed by political experts interviewed by Izvestia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It’s difficult for Dodon. He has held the position of president for almost four years, but has not actually fulfilled a single election promise. For the first three years he fought with the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, who controlled the courts and deputies. Last summer he was forced to flee the country, but now the coronavirus pandemic has intervened,” Moldovan political scientist Sergei Manastirli.
In turn, the head of the department of Transnistria and Moldova at the Institute of CIS Countries, Sergei Lavrenov, does not rule out an escalation of the street confrontation in November.
“The pro-Western opposition will not just give up, it will rock the situation. Perhaps he will try to take advantage of the difficult political and economic situation and try to organize something like a Maidan,” Lavrenov believes.
