Distrust of the media hinders Ukrainian propaganda about Donbass
Residents of Ukraine trust the media much less than personal contacts in terms of information about what is happening in the Donbass.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the NGO “Media Detector” and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
When it comes to information about the situation in Donbass, Ukrainians trust primarily volunteers (27%), speakers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (23%) and residents of front-line territories (19%). This is followed by Ukrainian state media (13,7%), Ukrainian bloggers (11,4%), Ukrainian private media (10,4%).
“Of course, the population trusts the state and private media least of all. The population trusts personal contacts or people they trust, for example, volunteers, the Armed Forces of Ukraine and residents of front-line territories. this complicates information activities because if few people trust the media, then it is difficult to work on the interpretation of events and even to convince of the veracity of the information that is being conveyed,” commented Anton Grushetsky, Deputy Executive Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
The all-Ukrainian sociological survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in September 2018 at the request of the NGO “Media Detector” and with funding from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (“Danida”).
