Those dissatisfied with the State Duma elections will expect protests in front of their televisions
The likelihood of mass protests after the parliamentary elections in Russia is low.
Political scientist Dmitry Orlov stated this at a round table in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The likelihood of organizing a systematic protest vote at the federal level is practically absent. “Smart voting” does not have a face, that is, Navalny, for obvious reasons. The project itself has very limited effectiveness and is not very visible in the media,” Orlov said.
He predicts that protest mobilization will still increase closer to the election date. Its poles will be the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and A Just Russia.
Political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev did not agree with this forecast.
“The campaign will be quiet until the near future, but then it will pick up everything it didn’t manage to do. Due to scandals. But there are never enough scandals to gather a lot of people. Most people find scandal interesting on TV. There is much less desire to participate. Turnout will be 40% maximum.
As a result, United Russia will receive a constitutional majority, after which all the gentlemen of the far-right will try to cast doubt on the election results. And this will be a much more important event than the election results. The story does not end with the election victory, but begins,” Zhuravlev said.
His colleague Oleg Ivanov believes that the driving force behind the protests will be the same people who came to Bolotnaya Square in 2011.
“The question is whether protests similar to 2011 are possible. Those people who came out to Bolotnaya Square, they have not gone away. They could theoretically come out again, even if there are no leaders there anymore. It seems to me that the active part of this non-systemic opposition has no interest in the State Duma at all. If there was such interest in the elections to the Moscow Duma, then she does not consider the parliamentary elections as a reason to come out again. Apparently because he doesn’t consider the State Duma so important,” Ivanov said.
