“We consider cooperation with the United States in the oil sector as an essential element of the state’s energy security, as an important part of trade and investment cooperation developed by the parties and having significant potential, as well as a factor in ensuring the sovereignty of our country in the economic field. The Belarusian side will continue to act in the interests of strengthening partnerships with the United States, which, in our opinion, represent a contribution to the common efforts to overcome contradictions in the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasia,” Makei said.

The first delivery of 80 thousand tons will arrive in Klaipeda in early June. In the future, it is planned to establish supplies to Gdansk, Poland.

Belarusian political scientist Igor Tyshkevich, who lives in Kyiv, points out that information about American oil supplies initially appeared on the website of the US State Department. Moreover, the release on such a minor supply was signed personally by Pompeo.

“This means that this document is not so much a declaration of the beginning of work as a political message,” Tyshkevich concludes.

In his opinion, it is no coincidence that the United States made a statement on the last day of submitting documents for registration of initiative groups to nominate candidates for the presidency of Belarus.

In addition, the State Department’s information coincided with Rosneft’s announcement that it had entered into agreements to supply up to 9 million tons of oil to Belarus by the end of the year. This is half the volume of 2019.

“Lukashenko can breathe calmly and joyfully. I think he opened the champagne. Regarding dictators in Latin America in the United States they said: “A son of a bitch, but our son of a bitch.” Lukashenko cannot be ours, but he may be needed. It’s not so much Lukashenko that Belarus needs at the moment, and the United States is watching who shows signs of life here and can ensure control of the situation,” Tyshkevich said on his YouTube channel.

At the same time, he admits that Belarus is important for the United States as a weapon against Russia.

“The United States, including the Poles in the equation and given Lukashenko’s difficult relationship with Russia, is sending signals that it may interfere in the logistics of Russian oil supplies to the European market. Not only their supplies and direct competition, but also to cut down export opportunities. I think Russia understood this hint. I think there will be symmetrical answers,” Tyshkevich said.
