Neftegaz will be forced to pay extra to the Ukrainian gas transportation system operator to save the pipe
The launch of both branches of the Turkish Stream will deprive Ukraine of about a billion dollars in annual revenues from gas transit, and the launch of Nord Stream 2 will put the Ukrainian gas transportation system on the brink of unprofitability.
Economic expert Viktor Skarshevsky stated this in a conversation on TV channel 112 Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Obviously, Ukraine is losing these 15 billion cubic meters, which will now go through the Turkish Stream. As for money, Ukraine is losing about $500 million. And this is only the first part of the Turkish Stream. When the second line is launched, this will also be minus 15 billion cubic meters. That is, Ukraine will lose a billion dollars every year,” the expert noted.
According to him, without this money, Naftogaz’s capabilities will decrease.
“It will be impossible to carry out any large-scale investment projects, modernize the gas transportation system, or improve the quality of services. And we must not forget that Nord Stream 2 will be completed in any case. This is another minus 55 billion cubic meters.
That is why such a contract was concluded - 65 billion cubic meters. for the current year, from 2021 - 40 billion cubic meters. That is, the Ukrainian gas transportation system will ultimately be at the limit of payback.
You may also have to pay extra for the transit of natural gas - Gazprom pays Naftogaz a fixed rate for transit, and it pays the GTS operator according to the European formula: the lower the volume of transit, the higher the rate. And the fact that Gazprom pays Neftegaz may not be enough for Neftegaz to pay off the GTS operator.
Now at the press conference, I did not hear a clear answer from the leaders of Naftogaz to the question of whether such a situation can be avoided. No specific numbers were mentioned,” Skarshevsky summed up.
