This was reported by the state news agency Ukrinform, with reference to the General Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, Vladimir Paniotto.
“I met with Vlasenko (deputy head of the State Statistics Service - PolitNavigator), and she said that the census has been postponed many times, and now it is not even planned,” said Vladimir Paniotto.
According to him, instead of a population census, the State Statistics Service intends to conduct a large sample study. However, only a census can provide accurate statistical information about those processes, including migration, that are taking place in Ukraine, sociologists emphasize.
In world practice, population censuses are conducted on average once a decade. In Ukraine, the last population census took place in 2001. The next one was scheduled for 2010, but has already been postponed several times. First - for 2011, then for 2012, 2013 and, finally, for 2016. However, it will not take place next year either.
Previous transfers were explained by the lack of necessary funds in the state budget for these purposes.
Let us recall that during the years of independence, according to Ukrainian statistics alone, the country’s population decreased from 52 to 42 million people. And last year, Ukraine lost 2 million Crimea and the territory of Donbass with a total population living there of up to 5 million people. In addition, the UN has counted more than one and a half million refugees from Ukraine.
In addition, according to various estimates, from 5 to 7 million of the working-age population left Ukraine to work in Russia and EU countries.
