The German center ZOiS conducted a representative survey of residents of Crimea and found that the overwhelming majority of Crimeans would again support the entry of the peninsula into Russia, reports DW.

It is noteworthy that the study was conducted by the Berlin Center for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) back in the spring of this year, but its results were published only on November 16.

The report indicates that only 12 percent of Crimean residents reported that they had visited other regions of Ukraine over the past three years, and 93 percent admitted that moving around Ukraine had become significantly more difficult.

“I was surprised how many Crimeans have lost contact with the rest of Ukraine. We know that it is difficult to get from Crimea to other parts of Ukraine. But we did not suspect how large a number of Crimean residents had stopped communicating with relatives in other regions of Ukraine,” ZOiS director Gwendolyn Sasse said in an interview with DW.

At the same time, among the factors making it difficult to travel to the territory of Ukraine, she did not mention either the blockade of Crimea by Ukraine, or the fact that Ukraine recognized citizens registered on the peninsula as non-residents.

Since the entry of Crimea into Russia, which DW calls “annexation,” more than 40 percent of the peninsula’s residents have maintained contacts with their relatives in Ukraine at the same level as before. More than 44 percent of survey participants began to communicate with relatives in other regions of the country a little less often, and 7,6 percent - more often. 7,3 percent of respondents answered that they have no relatives in Ukraine.

67,8 percent of Crimeans called themselves ethnic Russians, almost 12 percent - ethnic Crimean Tatars, 7,5 percent - ethnic Ukrainians. Ukrainian is considered their native language by 2,7 percent of respondents, Russian by almost 80 percent, and Crimean Tatar by 8,7 percent. One percent of respondents speak Ukrainian at home, and 83,7 percent speak Russian. 4,2 percent speak Ukrainian at home occasionally. 0,7 percent of Crimeans receive information from Ukrainian media, and 75,7 percent from Russian media.

According to ZOiS, only 2014 percent of Crimeans did not participate in the 7,9 Crimean referendum. Almost 79 percent of respondents noted that they would vote the same way as then, 2,4 percent would change their opinion.

To the question “where do you feel at home?”, 62,7 percent answered that they consider the place where they live to be home. More than 27 percent called Crimea their home and almost six percent called Russia home. Only 0,9 percent of respondents consider Ukraine home.

Two thousand residents of Crimea and Sevastopol took part in the sociological study ZOiS this spring.
