The 2015 American Freedom Award was awarded posthumously to Russian politician Boris Nemtsov. The ceremony took place at the International Republican Institute in Washington.

The prize was received by the politician’s long-time friend and ally – deputy chairman of the People’s Freedom Party, journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza Jr. The award was presented by Senator John McCain, who is chairman of the board of directors of the institute.
Boris Nemtsov was awarded the prize “for his life dedicated to promoting democracy in Russia.”
The Freedom Award has been awarded in the United States by the International Republican Institute (a grant organization under the US Republican Party) annually since 1995.
