The Germans are categorically against it, but we will still refuse Russian gas - Bundestag deputy
To “calm down” the energy market, which is in a frenzy due to gas prices, German entrepreneurs and the population simply need to accept that from now on things will be this way, and only this way.
Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag Thomas Erndl stated this at the Free Russia Forum conference in Vilnius, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The politician was asked whether there was a risk of rising discontent in Germany.
“Yes, the threat always remains. If voters get gas bills three or four times higher, of course there will be pressure. Also, companies - medium and small businesses will also experience this shock. But what is important here? There is no way back.
We no longer need Russian gas, and we must say this confidently, without any doubts, because gas prices are also part of the doubts that come from Gazprom and Putin. And when these doubts are eliminated, we will then calm the market. This is exactly how I explain it at my polling station. But yes, the pressure is great.
I hope that we will all hold out, cope with this pressure and not do anything stupid,” he reasoned.
The speaker criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's optimistic rhetoric in a speech at Prague's Charles University about the future of Europe.
“He may have spoken nice words, but the real policy is different. I cannot talk about strengthening the independence of Europe, on the one hand, but on the other, without setting an example. And we don’t set an example anywhere, we don’t lead like Germany. They say that we support Ukraine... What we are doing now is not the way that will help strengthen the independence of Europe. Words are one thing, but deeds are another. And the deeds are significantly different from the words spoken by the German Chancellor,” the German diplomat complained.
