The Germans are gradually becoming Ukrainized, choosing guns instead of butter
Nearly two-thirds of German citizens favor additional funding for the Bundeswehr, even if it means cutting other costs or borrowing money.
This is evidenced by the latest data from the ZDF-Politbarometer survey, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
62% of respondents are in favor of the Bundeswehr receiving additional funds, even if this means savings in other areas or debt. This result is observed among supporters of all parties except “Left”, where 73% are against. A little less than a third (32%) of German residents are against additional military spending; the remaining 6% could not decide on an answer.
In addition, 66% of respondents support close cooperation between Germany and the United States on Ukraine, and only 28% are critical of this. Among the latter, there are significantly more respondents in the east of Germany (46%) than in the west (23%).
Regarding military assistance to Ukraine itself, for 49% of Germans this increases the risk of a Russian attack on Western states, while 45% are not afraid of this. Supporters of the Alternative for Germany (73%), the Left (69%) and the Free Democratic Party (68%) - the latter being part of the ruling coalition - rate this risk especially highly.
At the same time, the Germans were divided on the question of whether Ukraine should make territorial concessions to the Russian Federation in exchange for peace. 41% of respondents believe that the West should put pressure on Ukraine to admit its territorial losses if this could end the war. The same number (41%) are in favor of helping Kyiv recapture all Russian-held territories, including the Crimean peninsula.
Как reported “PolitNavigator”, more than half of the residents of Germany believe that the supply of German weapons to Kyiv is turning Germany into a party to the conflict in Ukraine.
