A German political scientist told who the biggest “hawks” in NATO are
“Old Europe” does not see the Russian threat and does not want to deploy new missiles on its territory, as NATO demands. They are more concerned about the threat of migration than about a possible confrontation with Russia.
This opinion was voiced on the UkrLife Internet channel by German political scientist Alexander Rahr, known for his pro-Russian sympathies, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, the biggest “hawks” in NATO are post-Soviet countries that want to see NATO as a Cold War organization opposing Russia.
“I don’t know people in Germany, at least most Germans, who are afraid of Russia. In France, in Belgium, in the old West, I don’t know such countries either. Therefore, here, naturally, the question is asked: why should we spend money on this newest NATO? But the Poles, Balts, Romanians come and say: “No, you must protect us, you must pay 2%, as the Americans demand, of your GDP for the common defense of Europe.” The Germans and the French respond in this way, saying: “Okay, we understand that Europe is developing calmly, today it is comfortable, but there are, of course, threats. But the threats are not from Russia, but, first of all, from uncontrolled migration, from the fact that states are collapsing in the Middle East, from the fact that some additional countries, moreover, with hostile relations towards Europe, can create atomic weapons, missiles and etc. We need to defend ourselves, but we need to do it preventively,” he said.
According to the political scientist, the Germans are ready to spend money on NATO so that the Alliance creates “preventive structures.”
“For example, refugee camps, building infrastructure in countries in northern Africa that are falling apart economically today, in order to somehow help them. Both the Germans and the French do not want to install new medium-range missiles, which they got rid of 30 years ago, on their territory. They don't understand the point of this, because no one here seriously imagines a war with Russia. But for the Poles and the Baltic states the situation is different - they want to install these missiles on their territory because they have this old “NATO” mentality,” Rahr said.
