Ukraine's insecurity worries both Russia and Europe
Russia is building new gas pipelines to Europe only because Ukrainian transit is risky. This was stated at a press conference in Moscow by Irina Pominova, Deputy Head of the Fuel and Energy Complex Department of the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation.

Nord Stream 2 is a solution related to minimizing the risk of transporting our gas. If there were no risks regarding the price of transit and the reliability of transit, these projects would not be implemented. But risks remain. This worries both Russia and our European colleagues,” Pominova said.
She noted that as soon as it became possible to transport Russian gas via the Opal gas pipeline, which is a continuation of Nord Stream 1, transit through Ukraine decreased significantly.
