Haters of Russia and Serbia desecrated the Eternal Flame in Belgrade
Vandals poured paint on the Eternal Flame at the Memorial to the Liberators of Belgrade, the vice-mayor of the Serbian capital promised to find and punish the scoundrels.
This was reported by the Serbian editorial office of Sputnik, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is symbolic that the flame for the Eternal Flame was delivered to Belgrade from Moscow from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and lit jointly by President Aleksandar Vucic and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The vandals presumably operated at night, filling the eternal flame with paint, covering it with a bucket from under it, on which they painted a crossed out hammer and sickle and the inscription: “Liberators? No never!".
“The cynical attempt to classify Serbia among those European countries in which the war against anti-fascist monuments and the rewriting of history, unfortunately, has become systemic is obvious,” the Russian Embassy in Serbia commented on the situation. “We cannot rule out that the outcasts who committed this monstrous crime acted on external orders. It was intended in this way to create a split in the fraternal relations between our peoples. We are sure that this will not happen in Serbia!”
The vice-mayor of Belgrade (the post of mayor is still vacant) Goran Vesic has already responded to the incident and assessed the incident on his Facebook page.
“Yesterday evening an act of vandalism was committed in Belgrade, the target of which was the Eternal Flame memorial, which was recently opened at the Belgrade Cemetery. I strongly condemn this brutal act directed against all those who heroically laid down their lives for the liberation of Belgrade. At this stage, the police are trying to identify the culprits behind this anonymous and abnormal act. I will personally ensure that they are found and punished as severely as possible,” Vesic wrote.
