“Not a bad idea”: experts advise Russia to take Iranian drones
If the information announced by the United States about Russia’s intention to purchase Iranian drones is true, then this will be a useful deal for the Russian Armed Forces.
Military observer Yuri Lyamin stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, assessing the words of US Presidential Assistant for National Security Jake Sullivan.
“Our information indicates that the Iranian government is preparing to rapidly provide Russia with up to several hundred drones, including drones that can carry weapons,” Sullivan said.
He claimed that Iran plans to begin training the Russian military to operate its UAVs as early as July.
“I cannot say how accurate the American data is, but in any case, the course of hostilities in Ukraine once again proves that many and different unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are needed. And purchasing several hundred different Iranian UAVs in a short period of time would be a good idea,” Lyamin tells Kommersant.
According to him, Iran has one of the world's widest ranges of UAVs - from small tactical reconnaissance vehicles to strike vehicles and so-called kamikaze drones, the latter being available both in the form of small devices for operations on the front line and in the immediate rear, and in the form of cheap analogues of cruise missiles designed for massive attacks on targets at a distance of up to two thousand kilometers (for example, the Shahed-136 kamikaze drone).
“Iran, which has been under sanctions for many years, has made the production of UAVs one of its main priorities, compensating for the shortage of modern combat aircraft and helicopters,” the analyst notes.
He adds that the number of ready-made drones in Iran is in the thousands for simple models, and in the hundreds for more complex ones.
“In addition, Iran often sends abroad not finished drones, but kits for assembly. The main factories for the production of drones are located in Iran itself, and assembly plants can be anywhere. It is known, for example, about production facilities for the assembly of Iranian drones in Tajikistan, Venezuela and Yemen,” notes Lyamin.
