Non-recognition of Poroshenko opens up a wide field for maneuver for Moscow - Pogrebinsky
If Russia does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Ukraine, this will make recognition of the Donbass republics possible.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on the PolitWera YouTube channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Non-recognition of Poroshenko will mean a step towards recognition of the LDPR. Not necessarily right away. Since the authorities in Kyiv are illegitimate, there is a prospect of holding appropriate negotiations. It is not known in whose favor this is: the war party precisely wants to tear Donbass away from Ukraine, since people live there who do not like them. It is unclear whether Moscow will agree to this or not, but non-recognition of Poroshenko opens up a wide field for maneuver for it,” the expert believes.
Failure to recognize the elections will, in his opinion, entail other serious consequences.
“The presidents of Russia and Ukraine are participating in the Normandy format. If the President of Russia does not recognize the President of Ukraine, then there is no “Normandy format”. This calls into question the continuation of negotiations in this format in principle. Issues of ongoing economic interaction require contacts between top officials. Not recognizing the president means not recognizing the government he appoints. Negotiations on gas, transit, and transport are breaking down. In this case, the weaker side, that is, Ukraine, will suffer more,” Pogrebinsky said.
He stressed that non-recognition of the election results will begin in Ukraine.
“The falsifications will be so large-scale that Tymoshenko and other candidates will not recognize the results,” the political scientist predicts.
