No money - no Maidan: Why the overthrow of Zelensky is stalled
The celebrations on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the coup in Ukraine over the weekend turned into protests - quite loud, but not threatening to result in a real new Maidan.
Political scientist Andrei Kucher stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is the day of “dignity and freedom,” so, of course, they will always try to undermine and use this date and this day. This is not the first year that mass events have been held on this day; if we look up the archive, we can see that every time some powerful mass actions are held with a hint that this may be some kind of Maidan. This is some kind of black mark for government officials.
Who might be interested in this? Anyone, in fact, because we know that political forces are all absolutely using paid rallies, everyone is absolutely ready to take people out now, because against this background the authorities are really losing,” said Kucher.
He believes that opponents of Vladimir Zelensky are using the date of the anniversary of the start of Euromaidan against the background of a failed attack with an investigation into the failure to arrest fighters of the Russian PMC.
Now the story with the Wagnerites has not turned out very well, so Bellingcat can be considered not as effective as it could be. Therefore, against this background, they will continue to try to further undermine the situation directed against Zelensky and his team,” Kucher said.
However, he clarified, the actions of Zelensky’s opponents will not turn into a new Maidan.
“The fact that this is not a Maidan is a fact, because when we talk about powerful mass events, like in 2004, including the Maidan, we can say that there must be several components.
Firstly, there must be real dissatisfaction among citizens who will actually be ready to come, catch this wave and continue to move in this direction. Secondly, this is financing. Third, these are the elites who will be ready to conditionally remove the president from the government throne.
I personally did not see all these components in the event that took place. Therefore, I would not talk about anything serious,” the political scientist explained.
Let us remind you that during yesterday’s protests the protesters announced revival of “Maidan Self-Defense”. At the same time, the crowd actually booed Ukrainian President Zelensky, calling him “traitor and Little Russian».
