The renaming proposal was submitted for public discussion among townspeople in early March on the KSCA website, and although there were still two weeks left before the end of voting, the new name for the subway station was supported by 1310 people, and only 449 were against.
The renaming of the Petrovka station, the name of which is associated with the name of the revolutionary Grigory Petrovsky, caused a heated debate. “No need to rename anything! Better build new metro lines and stations, then you can introduce the Pochayna station,” suggests Kiev resident Andrei Ryazanov.
“I believe that the return of the name of the Pochayna River to the toponymy of Kyiv has a symbolic meaning. This is an opportunity to obtain important information about the past of your region,” says Tatyana Kirichuk.
There was also some bitter humor. Some suggested calling the station “George Bush” or “Book Market.”
According to the president of the Institute of Reforms and Development of Kyiv, Alexander Vovchenko, there is every chance that “Petrovka” will be renamed. “After discussion, the draft decision will be considered by the relevant commission, and then it will be submitted to the session of the Kiev City Council. As for the mass renaming of metro stations, in my opinion, it will not happen. Only the stations “Heroes of Dnepr” and “Arsenalnaya” have the prospect of renaming,” says Vovchenko.
According to him, the Leo Tolstoy station may also be renamed.
In addition, Kiev residents are discussing the renaming of three more streets and two public gardens. Oktyabrskaya Street on Svyatoshino was put up for voting with the new name Sulimovskaya, st. Kirovogradskaya in Goloseevo was proposed to be renamed in honor of the ATO militant Vladimir Brozhko who died in the Donbass, and again the street. Wanda Vasilevskaya, giving her the name of the first director of the Ukrainian Soros Foundation, Bogdan Gavrylyshyn.
