This was stated by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko in today’s interview with the Kyiv publication Segodnya.
“Last year we detained a record number of corrupt officials receiving or extorting bribes. We took 9425 people hot! Of these, 1692 people were convicted! This is more than three times more than in any other year. Yes, there are mostly suspended sentences; in fact, 107 people ended up in prison,” Lutsenko said.
He noted that judges have the opportunity to award sentences below the lower limit, but in 2015 the Verkhovna Rada decided to prohibit imposing sentences below the lower limit in corruption crimes. Therefore, the Prosecutor General’s Office is now checking how many of the mentioned 1 people committed crimes after 692.
“If there are any, and I’m sure that there are at least half of them, then this means that the judges made illegal decisions. And I promise... that in all such cases the prosecutor’s office will begin criminal prosecution of judges who made obviously unlawful decisions,” Lutsenko said.
