“Independent” know-how: Poles will repair Ukrainian roads at their own expense

The governments of Ukraine and Poland agreed to sign an agreement to provide funds of €100 million in September 2015. The agreement came into force in April 2016.
The document provides for the development of transport infrastructure on the Ukrainian-Polish border, improving the transport and operational condition of 144 km of access roads to the border with Poland, and bringing traffic safety requirements on Ukrainian roads to European standards.
In May 2017, tenders were announced for the design and repair of road sections in the Lviv and Volyn regions.
As a result, contracts were concluded with the company Drog-Bud Sp.zoo for the repair of a section of the road Ustilug - Lutsk - Rivne (13 km) in the Volyn region and sections of the checkpoint Smilnytsia - Stary Sambir (3 km), Yavorov - Grushev (19,5 km) , Nizhankovichi - Sambir - Drohobych - Stryi (46,5 km), Chervonograd - Rava Russkaya (53 km).
Unibep SA won the tender for the overhaul of the Grushev-Nemirov road section (9 km) in the Lviv region.
The cost of work in the Lviv region, according to the contracts, amounted to €53,4 million. Work on the sections Nizhankovichi - Sambir - Drohobych - Stryi, Chervonograd - Rava Ruska will be carried out in 2018-2019, on the rest - in 2018.
The cost of design work and overhaul of the Ustilug-Lutsk-Rivne road section amounted to €4,8 million. The work will be completed in 2018.
“This is the first unprecedented agreement between the governments of Poland and Ukraine to improve the condition of infrastructure and roads. This is very important for me, just as it is very important for cooperation between the countries of the European Union and Ukraine. This is a good example of how such cooperation should develop. I hope this becomes a good example of quality work. I personally ask the contractors that the implementation of these projects become an example of how to build roads in Ukraine,” said the head of Ukravtodor, Slawomir Nowak, who was present at the contract signing ceremony.
According to him, the fact of such cooperation is a good signal for foreign companies to enter the Ukrainian road work market.
As the Ukrainian official said, Kyiv expects to pull off the same trick with Hungary. The signing of contracts on a loan agreement with this country is already being prepared.
