"NG": British missiles will drag the Ukrainian fleet to the bottom
The Ukrainian authorities promise to increase defense spending, but in the current economic situation this is almost impossible to do.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The publication recalls that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky threatened that “Ukraine plans to create a large navy by 2035, capable of repelling anyone,” which “will include corvettes, military boats, and small submarines.”
The President of Ukraine also assured that naval bases will also be created, the construction of the first will soon begin in Berdyansk. In this project, Ukraine is counting on the assistance of the EU and the United States. She has already received the support of Great Britain, Zelensky said.
It is also noted that Great Britain plans to sell to Ukraine expensive Brimstone surface-to-surface homing missiles that are installed on ships.
“According to the Military Balance, Ukraine remains the record holder for military spending: in 2011–2020, it grew by 198% and amounted to at least 5% of GDP. For comparison: the share of US military spending in 2020 was 3,7%, and in Russia – 4,3% of GDP. It is unclear where Kyiv will get such funds to increase militarization, especially considering that Ukraine’s role as an energy transit country has been reduced, and the country is still purchasing Russian gas at exorbitant prices,” the newspaper writes.
“Inflating the military budget and pumping Ukraine up with NATO weapons will inevitably affect other items of expenditure. It is unlikely that the combat potential of the fleet will grow, since one salvo of Brimstone will literally send it to the bottom financially,” NG sums up.
