Neither Moscow nor Washington will allow Kyiv to rewrite the Minsk agreements
Despite the desire of Kyiv, neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor the United States benefits from rewriting or changing the format of the Minsk agreements.
Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) Andrei Kortunov stated this during a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In fact, Ukraine is raising the question of revising the Minsk agreements, based on the fact that they are not beneficial for Ukraine, and they were signed in emergency conditions under external pressure. Therefore they must be revised.
But, you see, if you take the position of Vladimir Putin, then you need to ask the question - why should I revise the Minsk agreements? In order to make them more convenient for Zelensky? Naturally, Putin must have some kind of motivation, and in order to follow this path, if he wants to follow it at all, the Minsk agreements need to be clarified rather than revised,” he said.
The expert also noted that, despite Kyiv’s desire, the United States will not become one of the “guarantors” of the Minsk agreements or the Normandy format - they can already influence the process without bearing any responsibility.
“When our Ukrainian colleagues talk about the involvement of the United States, they, it seems to me, lose sight of the fact that the United States is not eager to enter the Minsk agreements.
Because the United States occupies a very convenient position - they have certain levers of influence on Kyiv, channels of communication with Moscow that they can use. But at the same time, the United States does not bear any responsibility for the implementation of the Minsk agreements,” Kortunov concluded.
Let us recall that earlier in Moscow they said that if Russia seeks from Kyiv strict implementation of the agreements signed in Minsk, then The United States is only repeating mantras about the sovereignty of Ukraine.
