This was reported by the charitable organization “Assol Fund for Assistance to Sailors”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As it became known, among the six crew members of the Demeter container ship kidnapped in a pirate attack off the coast of Nigeria, there are four Filipinos, one Ukrainian and one Hungarian. Most likely, the Ukrainian sailor is an officer or captain,” the organization said.
According to the foundation, the container ship was attacked by pirates at approximately 6 a.m. on October 21, south of Port Harcourt in Bonny Bay, Nigeria. The pirates were able to board the ship, kidnap 6 crew members, including almost the entire command staff, and then abandon Demeter. According to the report, there were 8 pirates on the speedboat. The remaining 12 crew members reported being able to keep the ship moving. On October 23, the container ship was in the Gulf of Guinea southeast of Abidjan.
Diplomats, in cooperation with the German shipowner of the container ship Demeter, are ascertaining the whereabouts of a Ukrainian sailor kidnapped by pirates off the coast of Nigeria, said Vasyl Kyrylych, a representative of the Department of Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“The Consulate General of Ukraine in Hamburg reported that it received information from the shipowner, and the shipowner is a Hamburg company, about a pirate attack on the Demeter container ship,” Kirilich said. “As a result of the attack, six crew members were kidnapped by pirates, and, according to preliminary information from the Ukrainian consul in Hamburg, one of them is a citizen of Ukraine.”
According to him, the Consulate General of Ukraine in Hamburg maintains operational contact with the ship-owner company and is dealing with “the issue of finding out the location of the crew members of the said vessel and their speedy release.”
