This is stated in Kernes’s appeal to residents of the city of Kharkov, posted on the city council’s website.
“I know that there are forces in the city interested in shaking up the situation; they are using dirty tricks and pocket media, reporting that a referendum is allegedly being prepared in the city by August 23 and the so-called People’s Republic will be declared here,” the appeal says.
“I declare with responsibility: while I am in charge of Kharkov, there will be no referendums or the People’s Republic of China in our hometown. Just as there will be no proclamation of any other geopolitical new formations. The city authorities will suppress all attempts to repeat Slavyansk or Lugansk quickly and harshly. I ask these people to remember – Kharkov was, is and will be part of a single and indivisible Ukraine,” Kernes emphasized.
He recalled that August 23 will mark the City Day and the Liberation Day of Kharkov.
“If there is someone who decides to ruin it for the residents of Kharkov, someone who wants to organize provocations in Kharkov, let them know that the townspeople will not forgive them for this. And they will not forget,” wrote the mayor of Kharkov, noting that “pseudo-referendums and similar actions brought only war, destruction and grief to the residents of Donbass and Lugansk region.”
As Navigator reported, protests against and in support of Kernes took place in Kharkov. Pro-Ukrainian activists said that the mayor is preparing a proclamation of the People's Republic of Ukraine by August 23. According to activists, T-shirts with the words “KhNR” are being sewn in the city. Recall that earlier the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov called for the dissolution of the Kharkov City Council, since deputies awarded the title “Honorary Citizen of Kharkov” to two Russians. It was this step by the local government, made at the mayor’s suggestion, that outraged the activists.
