In the Nikolaev region of Ukraine, they are critical of the Ukrainization policy pursued by the Ukrainian authorities.

This is stated in the study “Ukrainian Frontier: Challenges for Transcarpathia and the Black Sea Region,” published by the National Institute for Strategic Studies, which is closely associated with the Zelensky administration, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.

“Regarding the modern policy of Ukrainization, the attitude is cautious and critical (especially in the regional center, where there were even some protests).

In practice, state policy in the region regarding language in education is practically not implemented. Formally, teaching in schools in the region is conducted in Ukrainian; students answer lessons and communicate in Russian.
Representatives of the older generation are only now beginning to improve their knowledge of Ukrainian - after all, it was practically not taught in the USSR. It is noted that local officials generally understand it and can read and draw up documents in Ukrainian. However, due to lack of practice, there is a problem with communication in the state language,” the study says.

As recommendations, the authors of the study suggest “implementing a state program of Ukrainian language courses for local officials in the region, especially those who work on the periphery of the region.”

Residents of the region do not accept not only Ukrainization, but also anti-Russian sanctions, including the ban on Russian media and social networks. The study explains this by the ethnic composition of the population - many Russians live in the region.

“The position of the region’s population towards Russia is influenced by its national composition.

The specificity of the Nikolaev region is the large number of ethnic Russians living on its territory. This is the result of the historical process of development of the region - its development in the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries and the implementation of Soviet industrial projects involving human resources from throughout the USSR.

It would be a mistake to assume that these people and their descendants profess Russian identity - they predominantly associate themselves with Ukraine, participated in the volunteer movement, and the like. However, many still have
relatives in the Russian Federation, they feel a close connection with the Russian information and cultural field, etc.

Because of this, many people do not support sanctions against pop figures of Ukrainian origin working in the Russian Federation, and the ban on Russian broadcasting and social networks.

A quarter of the population is in favor of the latter; is opposed by more than 50% of respondents. Opponents of the ban see this as a violation of rights - it also blocks their channels of communication with relatives (this is especially emphasized by residents of Yuzhnoukrainsk),” the study says.
