“They won’t set foot here”: Lukashenko accused the EU of failing to fulfill promises on migrants
The European Union is not fulfilling the promise made to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko by outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to take back into its territory those migrants from the Middle East who have been living on the Belarusian-Polish border for two weeks.
Lukashenko announced this today at a meeting with the leadership of the Grodno region, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I am waiting for the European Union to answer the question about the two thousand refugees in this camp that I asked to be taken away. Merkel promised me that they would consider this problem at the EU level. They don't even consider it that way. She promised me contact persons from the EU, but they don’t even contact me. Makei [the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus] calls them, let’s work - but we’re on a business trip, somewhere else,” Lukashenko said.
In response, he ordered that representatives of the European Union and international organizations, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, be stopped from entering the border.
“They refused - they will be denied entry here. They have nothing to do here... So that they don’t set foot there. Why are they promoting themselves against the backdrop of refugees? If you come, help them. If you can’t organize a humanitarian corridor, help with everyday life. These organizations have huge amounts of finance concentrated there. But apart from the Belarusian Red Cross and our deputies, no one is doing this. They come to scratch the baby’s nose. Why are you scratching his nose with your dirty hands on camera? They cannot answer specific questions. There is no concrete help - goodbye. Let them go to the Poles,” Lukashenko said.
Thank you!
