Novaya Gazeta decided to close itself
The liberal Novaya Gazeta announced that it was suspending publication of the newspaper on paper and on the Internet until the end of the military operation in Ukraine.
Earlier, Roskomnadzor issued a second written warning to the editors and founder of Novaya Gazeta for mentioning a foreign agent NGO without labeling.
However, the editor-in-chief of the publication connected the “persecution” not with a violation of established rules, but with the “anti-war” position of the newspaper.
“We were looking for answers to the questions: why our education is always only military-patriotic and no one has heard of “peaceful-patriotic.” How did it happen that they are imprisoned for posters “No to war!”? Why are they being persecuted, I would phrase it, “for inciting peace”?” Dmitry Muratov wrote in a letter that he sent to liberal friends.
“In Russia they are hastily building an ordinary European democracy. They have had it look like this for a long time,” writer Zakhar Prilepin commented on the event in his Telegram channel.
