The new arms race was unaffordable for the United States
The extension of the START III treaty, which the new White House administration agreed to, is caused by US economic problems.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Valdai Club expert Richard Weitz told Izvestia about this.
“Most European allies, including the NATO secretary general, also supported preserving the treaty, and Biden is seeking to restore contacts with them that were broken over the previous four years. A new arms race will cost a lot of money - given the continuously growing US national debt, which has reached an astronomical $28 trillion, the American budget may not be able to support it,” says Weitz.
In turn, the head of the Washington Center for Global Interests, Nikolai Zlobin, believes that Russia could bargain for additional benefits when extending the treaty.
“For example, put forward conditions related, for example, to Ukraine, and most importantly, to Nord Stream 2.” American missile defense systems, by the way, are also outside the treaty,” Zlobin said.
The START Treaty will be extended until February 5, 2026. Before this date, the parties must agree on how the arms control system will be built in the future.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Russian Foreign Ministry praised the new administration The United States is in favor of extending the treaty.
