New EU strategy. Why Merkel disowned the “Crimean Platform”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, scheduled to visit on August 22, is flying to Ukraine to persuade President Vladimir Zelensky not to protest the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline ahead of his meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik said this on air on the First Independent TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This visit comes on the eve of two events. First, on the eve of the “Crimean Platform”. That is, a day earlier from the “Crimean Platform”, and I don’t think that Merkel will remain on the “Crimean Platform”. Most likely, this will mean that Merkel, on the one hand, will demonstrate support for Ukraine, and on the other, will try not to irritate Russia. Merkel’s participation in the “Crimean Platform” is unlikely and more significant in that she will not stay for this day. this will demonstrate to us the new strategy of the European Union and Germany towards Russia,” the political scientist said.
“Secondly, this visit is taking place on the eve of the Biden-Zelensky meeting. And this is the most important thing that Merkel is traveling with today. Merkel’s task is to convince Zelensky that the positions of Ukraine and Germany during the dialogue with the United States, including the dialogue regarding the American-German memorandum on Nord Stream 2, have one voice,” Bortnik said.
