Disappearance from a forward post in the Kherson region of a soldier of the 95th Airborne Assault Brigade, Evgeniy Dobrinsky, which was later discovered in Crimea, is unlikely to have been a consequence of his abduction.

Ivan Stupak, a former employee of the Main Directorate of the SBU in Kyiv, a consultant to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security and Defense, admitted this on Radio Liberty, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

The absence of Yevgeny Dobrinsky at the observation post in the area of the Chongar Peninsula, where he served, was revealed on May 30. Signs of a struggle were found near the observation post. Some Ukrainian media and experts put forward the version that the border guard was kidnapped by Russian special services.

Stupak revealed some details that refute the original Ukrainian version that the missing Dobrinsky was unarmed at his post.

“Based solely on what is in the public domain, I don’t believe in kidnapping. The outpost is located in close proximity to Russian positions. The serviceman disappeared, his weapons and ammunition remained in place, and signs of a struggle were found nearby.

It turns out that the person who was in his place, on duty, left his weapon, went outside the place of duty, entered into a fight with someone and was abducted.

The question arises: was he really the only one in close proximity to the Russian border, where there is a huge number of Russian military and Russian special services who constantly strive to provoke or kidnap? That is, a direct combat threat. And he is alone? And he left the weapon?

There are two options. Either the leadership of the border post is completely careless and forced one person to serve, or it was AWOL,” says Ivan Stupak.

He suggests that there were two servicemen at the post, one tried to leave, the second tried to stop him, and died.

“The weapon was in place, it remained untouched. A serviceman has gone missing, and signs of a struggle were found nearby. Additional information has emerged that another soldier from the same brigade was killed. I don’t want to make insinuations, but my inner conviction is that there were two of them at the post, one of them tried to leave, the second tried to stop him, died, and the first disappeared towards the Russian border, went AWOL. Traces of the struggle are not at the place of duty, in the distance, and the serviceman has no right to leave his duty station. This is criminal liability,” says Ivan Stupak.

Theoretically, the Russian side could kidnap a serviceman, but there is no motive for such a kidnapping.

“(The AWOL version) doesn’t play in our favor; it’s easier to say that ‘the Russians kidnapped’.” I do not rule out that they could have done this, but why do they need an ordinary employee? An incredible number of our officials and military personnel come to Crimea every year, with whom we can have long recruiting conversations; they return back to Ukraine and can supply information for a long time.

And here, well, they kidnapped me, well, he said that he was on duty three times a week, commander so-and-so. That's it, he doesn't know anything else. What's the point of stealing it? There was absolutely none.

And even if we assume that they kidnapped him, they would have entered the place where he is serving, kidnapped him, and taken away his weapons and documentation. But there is not a word about this,” said Ivan Stupak.
