New high-profile murder - Ukraine disrupts the Normandy Four meeting
Recent events in Donbass clearly show that the conflict in the region is far from its peaceful resolution.
Political experts interviewed by Moskovsky Komsomolets came to this conclusion when assessing the latest events.
The publication notes that on the night of January 21 in Donetsk, near the elevator of his building, the deputy commander of the special forces regiment of the internal troops, Alexey Krivulya, was shot three times in the back.
In addition, on January 20, Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Sergei Krivonos stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be prepared to forcefully return Donetsk and Lugansk to the republic and called for reforming the army so that it could conduct offensive combat operations.
At the same time, the head of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflict Studies, Denis Denisov, believes that there are no special factors that would indicate that an escalation of the conflict is planned or is already occurring in Donbass.
“At the same time, it is beneficial for a number of politicians to present the situation in a different way. After all, it’s no secret that the topic of Donbass has long been removed from the list of priorities on the international agenda. At the same time, nothing speaks of an imminent detente. Negotiations in Minsk are stalled, and the agreements reached within the Normandy Four in Paris remain unrealized. In France, it was agreed that the “Normandy summit” would be held again in March-April 2020, but if the situation remains the same, nothing like this will happen. There is simply no reason for new negotiations,” Denisov said.
A similar opinion is shared by the deputy head of the Institute of CIS Countries, Vladimir Zharikhin, according to whom, there are sluggish military actions in Donbass, which have long become the norm for the region, but at the same time, each of the episodes in this confrontation can quickly escalate into large-scale clashes.
Therefore, the expert proposes not to limit ourselves to the three demilitarized areas created for the sake of holding the Normandy Four, but to seriously approach the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the agreements that were reached in Paris, including the disengagement of troops along the entire front line.
“At the same time, there is no hope that in the foreseeable future France and Germany will put pressure on Kyiv to fulfill its promises. Today they have more important topics, such as the conflict in Libya. The situation in Donbass has faded into the background. But if Kyiv does nothing, there will be no new meeting in the Normandy format in the spring, because Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will simply have nothing to talk about,” Zharikhin concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, on January 20 in Donetsk the deputy regiment commander was shot dead special forces of the internal troops of the DPR, better known as the international brigade “Pyatnashka”, Alexey Krivulya (call sign “Green”).
