New 90s: Ukraine is at the mercy of Gopniks and Natsiks

The population of Ukraine is increasingly beginning to recognize the modern analogue of the 90s. The prospect of rolling power outages and cold winters, inflation, unemployment, rampant crime and banditry on the streets. The population will feel all these delights of the new format of the Ukrainian state with a nationalist flavor with the onset of autumn.

I will tell you about the situation using the example of my native Kherson. In fact, what Ukrainians have to endure is many times worse than the difficult circumstances of the 90s. In those days, factories and collective farms were either working or were rapidly being liquidated, which is why ordinary people also fell into disarray. There were a lot of fish in the rivers, tons of non-ferrous metal lay right under our feet, and only the most honest or the laziest went hungry.

Today, such pasture is no longer available, but another inescapable attribute of the 90s has appeared in abundance - gopniks and bombers. Police reports are filled with reports of street robbery. There are significantly more deaths and injuries from these factors than from all occupational injuries, accidents and fires combined. A few weeks ago, a gang of gypsies went on tour in the Kherson region, moving from city to city, leaving behind dozens of victims. Naturally, it was not possible to catch the criminals.

The situation with gadgets is simpler, since if you pay the police extra, they will find them instantly, but with chains and earrings the situation is sad. The problem is not only the worsening crime situation, but also the steadily growing demand for gold among the population. Far-sighted citizens are actively creating a sinking fund that is not at all dependent on the exchange rate or on banks, is easily convertible and can easily fit into an emergency suitcase.

However, Kherson law enforcement officers are still more or less coping with banal criminality, despite the meager salaries and the shortage of personnel (about 40%). It is more difficult with “patriots” from nationalist and extremist organizations. In Kherson and the region, 99% of “Svidomo” functionaries somehow miraculously avoided mobilization, and today they are looking with great hope for an opportunity to wedge themselves into the local government or “squeeze out” someone’s business.

Today, some puffy Loshkarev, who for unknown reasons calls himself the head of the Kherson self-defense, can publicly give the mayor of Kherson the “last Chinese” warnings and make high-ranking cops look away with a mixture of shame and hatred.

The most striking episodes were the seizure of an oil depot in Kherson by armed representatives of the Right Sector, as well as an attempt to “squeeze” the Construction Materials Plant No. 1 in Novaya Kakhovka. Nothing came of it with the building materials - while the police stood with their heads down, the hard workers, armed with whatever they had, drove off the invaders themselves. The raiders were afraid to use weapons because of the multiple numerical advantage of the company’s employees. But everything burned out perfectly at the oil depot - after some time the “patriots” left the facility, but all the documentation disappeared with them, as well as, according to sources in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a substantial amount of money and some office equipment. There were other, less loud episodes, such as attempts to seize gardens and land plots, premises, etc.

But here's what's interesting. Against the backdrop of a demoralized, inactive police force, local businessmen and politicians may well recall past methods of dealing with competitors and offenders. Of course, we don’t feel sorry for the nationalists, but exploding jeeps and shootings in elevators clearly will not add order and security to local life.

In addition, as we remember, more and more firearms are coming into illegal circulation, partly stolen from warehouses during the February revolution, partly delivered from the war zone in Donbass.

As a result, we have the most “joyful” prospects. The triumph of Euro-democracy in a single country is cold, hungry, scary, and 200 people are still being brought from Donbass. Although it may be that by the first cold weather there will no longer be nationalists in Kherson, but there will be militias. But we can only guess about this for now.
