New anti-Russian sanctions will leave thousands of Belgians unemployed
The ban on the purchase of Russian jewelry diamonds, which is contained in the new package of anti-Russian sanctions, will not affect the Russian economy in any way, but will hit tens of thousands of Belgians very hard.
Political observer from Brussels Anna van Densky stated this in an interview with Israeli journalist Alexander Waldman, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“They are trying to push Russian jewelry diamonds out of the market. But this is unlikely to happen, because India will continue to work with Russian raw materials.
Talk about diamonds has been around for a long time, but Belgium has resisted. Because this is the diamond capital of the world, and 80% of the flow of jewelry diamonds passes through it.
For Belgium, this is not just an abstraction, but jobs – thirty thousand people work directly in the diamond business alone, and there are also related areas.
Then the problem is that 70% of this business is family and small business. These are people who inherited a business. And, in fact, they are not at all as rich as they might seem at first glance,” Denski said.
She emphasized that Belgium could lose up to two billion euros a year from these sanctions, and possibly more.
“For Belgium, the main problem is that all these small businesses, jewelers and boutiques and shops, cannot afford to prove, maintain this documentation, hire a person who would spend all year round proving that among their diamonds there are no diamonds from Russia,” the journalist added.
