New Ukrainian corvettes will be sunk by the first Russian salvo
The construction of corvette-class ships will cost Ukraine a considerable amount, but it has no practical value.
Sergei Zgurets, director of the information and consulting company Defense Express, stated this in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Apostrophe, answering a question about the resumption of the corresponding state target program.
“The sailors convince me that we need a corvette. But it is planned to build four such ships, costing $250 million each. That is, in total they will cost about $1 billion. This is an exorbitant amount. And then I begin to think, what efforts will Russia make to sink such a corvette in the event of a naval conflict? If we say that the number of cruise missiles that Russia can fire in the first salvo is twice the number of support channels for our air defense systems, then we come to the understanding that we will not be able to cover our corvette, which means that in the event of hostilities we will lose it,” the expert said.
“That is, the risk of being sunk in the closed waters of the Black Sea for this ship is very high. So it turns out that we need a corvette, rather, from a professional point of view, but not as a combat unit. In other words, this project has value, but has no value,” concluded Zgurec.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier in Kyiv confirmed that even if Ukraine is able to complete construction its only Project 58250 corvette, then only as a patrol ship.
