The new head of the UOC-MP will continue to balance between Western and Eastern Ukraine
Kyiv, August 13 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – 70-year-old Metropolitan Onuphry was elected as the new head of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate at a council of bishops in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra - he had already held the post of locum tenens for several months after a sharp deterioration in the health of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kyiv.

Speaker of the UOC-MP Georgy Kovalenko said that the new primate was elected in two rounds of secret voting. In the first round, 36 out of 74 votes were given for him, in the second – 48 out of 74. In second place was the mirtopolitan of Boryspil and Brovary, Anthony.
The winner of the elections will most likely try to maintain the policy of his predecessor - to balance between Eastern and Western Ukraine, where the UOC-MP also still has many parishioners.
This was noticeable in the position of the Kyiv Metropolis in recent weeks - it called on the authorities to stop the use of force in Donbass, but at the same time stated that it supported the preservation of the region as part of Ukraine, and the Lviv diocese, for example, purchased body armor for participants in the so-called. ATO.
The enthronement of Metropolitan Onuphry is scheduled to take place on August 17. He receives the post of Primate of the UOC-MP for life. The outcome of the elections must be approved by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, but the head of the Russian Orthodox Church is unlikely to arrive in Kyiv due to the political situation - the Ukrainian authorities oppose his arrival.
